How much do you walk daily?  For many of us our lifestyles often do not involve a lot or enough walking.  What does your lifestyle look like?  Could you benefit from walking more?

Walking is such an easy and effective way to support a more healthier active lifestyle

Here are some simple tips on how you can find ways each day to increase the amount you walk. We hope that to helps you to make change and walk more.

Incorporate More Walking into your Daily Routine

  • Getting to and from work/ or an outing.  Could you walk to work or the outing?  If you drive or use public transport could you park or get off  further away from your work or outing and walk.
  • Throughout your day or work day – Walk in your breaks. Have a walking meeting or catch up. Take regular walking breaks from your desk/ computer or activities. Always use the stairs when you can
  • Structure your day to enjoy a walk
    • before or after work, or at a regular time in your day … can you get up a little earlier and enjoy a walk. Do you have time during or at the end of the day. It can sometimes feel hard to find energy for a walk…but more than often walking will give you a lift rather that deplete you of energy.
    • if you have a more flexible lifestyle ,,,create a plan for the day or week and set a time for  your walking. If you plan for it, it is more likely not slip from your day
  • To help keep up your motivaton for walking and keeping it interesting you could vary your walking and or join others for a walk …friends or maybe a walking group,
  • Use technology to assist with your regularity & motivation. Set reminders on your phone to get up and walk. Record your daily walking….count the number of steps.  Set walking goals and use technology to determine if you reach the goals.
  • Do not let weather deter you from your daily walking. Dress for the weather for walking outdoors or remember you can find spaces indoors to walk even if it is a simple circuit in your home …like the hall and around the dining table.

Take some time to reflect on your daily activity and consider how you could acheive more movement in your day. A great way to do this is to walk more. Make a change, make a schedule, make it happen and feel the benefits of moving more.
