LiveLifeMove – Movement is Good

We move every single day in so many ways. The motion of our bodies is often something we don’t consciously think about.

Your body is, hopefully, constantly growing and adapting to the huge range of movement stimulation that is available to it.  Problems only start to occur when we don’t offer our body enough movement or that the movement we do is very similar e.g sit at a desk, sit in a car, sit on the couch… Unfortunately not moving is becoming easy as our culture becomes more sedentary and accepting of inactivity.

Walking

The Benefits

Physical health, mental health and well being can all be improved through movement. We can gain the benefits of boosted mood, concentration and alertness.  Cardiovascular health can be improved, self-esteem will increase and stress drops away.  The type of movement needed to influence these outcomes does not need to be strenuous, going for a walk each day has been shown to have a variety of positive effects.  Put quite simply movement is good for us on so many levels.

We must also consider the importance of nature – natural light, temperature variance, distance for your eyes, sounds we hear, things we feel on our skin, biochemistry and micro-organisms we interact with, the non-conformity, lumps and bumps of it – when compared to being inside or being in a built up concrete environment.

Movement vs Exercise

Every single day we stand, we sit, we eat, we travel from one place or room to another, we may go for a walk… Movement is therefore an integral part of our day.  Movement can be formal and planned or unformal, reactive to what’s going on around us. Movement is defined as the act or process of moving, especially change of place or position or posture.

Exercise is structured it occurs when we have time, within a timeframe and usually in a specific place designed for it e.g. a gym, a sports stadium, a bike trail, a running track.

What if you could build more movement into your day, in both structured (exercise) and unstructured ways?

LiveLifeMove – Movement is Good for Us

Move in Many Ways – Walking & Hiking

The simplicity and magnificence of walking should not be underestimated.  The boxes it ticks in terms of so many elements of our health is amazing.

Move in Many Ways – Biking

An amazing form of transport to immediately connect you to the outside environment.  Getting you to and moving you through spaces you might otherwise not see or experience.

Move in Many Ways – Stretching

Whether it is a simple stretch routine you have while sitting at a desk, a yoga class or some tai chi forms.  Moving in a controlled, slow, flowing way, taking your joints through a wide range of motion while being mindful of your breathing has been proven through many centuries to be wonderful for our bodies.

Move in Many Ways – Strengthening

There are so many wonderful ways to move that fall into this category.  As we age and our bodies being the natural process of degeneration we can maintain strength and power in our bones and muscles when we… lift the groceries, swim, work out with weights, dig in the garden, pick up our children/grandchildren…

Move in Many Ways – Social Sports or Games

Interaction with others is an important aspect of being a human.  We are designed to be social and have people around us.  Combining the social, with the mental and obvious physical aspect of sports or games fulfils many needs.  When did you last play?
