We want to discuss the complicated link between looking good in our clothing and moving more. What is it about the clothing that we choose that influences movement? Can the type of clothes you choose really change how you move or the outcomes of your movement? Let us learn some interesting things about this intriguing subject – the link between clothes & movement.
Clothes & Movement – What is the Connection?
Your look
Every single day we stand in front of a wardrobe and choose what we are going to wear for the day. Clothing is therefore an integral part of our day. Everyone wants to look and feel their best through presenting themselves to the world in a way that conforms to societies expectations but also reveals the individual that they are. There is a complicated balance around this process, the dilemma of ‘what to wear’.
When you get your clothing right you will trust in and be comfortable with the image that others are seeing of you. It will feel right. The clothing will allow you to perform and move while being what you see as acceptable attire for your age, shape, gender, personality, and social status.
What relationship do you have with your clothing? How much of your current wardrobe do you wear? What does your wardrobe say about who you are? Building up a reliable set of clothes will instantly simplify your day.
Your Confidence
Clothing plays a major role as our ‘second skin’ in the way that we are preceived. Unfortunately the fashion world is a bit stuck in presenting an unrealistic version of what a women should look like. The emphasis is also on trends and keeping up to date, forcing consumption to be the norm.
What we wear, how it fits and feels, the colours we chose all influence our confidence.
Your Mood
Our moods effect what we chose to do and how we go about doing it. If we are filled with confidence and have trust in the clothing we are wearing we will move and act in a much more assured way, our behaviour will change or be boosted. So we can gain psychological comfort from the clothes we choose to exercise or do activities in.
There is also a clear connection between improved physical well being and mental well being, and movement. Being active boosts our concentration and alertness, we become less stressed and have greater self-esteem. We all have a favourite outfit or garment, something that triggers a happiness in us for what ever reason. If we can have movement clothing that gives this us these feelings, along with the ability to wear that clothing for much of our day, the outcomes can only be positive.
Your Comfort
Fit is so important. As soon as your clothing pulls or restricts, digs in or creates discomfort you will feel like their is something wrong with your body. Feel is also a major consideration, the tactile effect of fabric against your skin and this fabric is felt as you move.
It’s not your body it’s how the clothing is made! We want to remove the ‘frump’ and discomfort that some movement clothing has. You can still wear movement clothing and look good. Easy to wear, stylish garments that still have a performance or movement function.
The impact of your look, your confidence your mood, your comfort, on movement
Movement clothing that is stylish, flattering and comfortable will lift our mood. We are therefore more likely to move in a more positive way. What we wear simply effects how confident and competent we feel and therefore effects our performance or outcomes. When the oufit is ‘successful’ you will feel capable, your clothes will no longer be a concern or using up your energy. They will allow you to be more focused on whatever task or experience is at hand.
The term ‘dopamine dressing’ applies – feel transformed, capable & confident in your clothes. What will stylish, flattering, comfortable clothing do for you? With clothing like this in your wardrobe the process of dressing for movement becomes easier. Anxieties, private insecurities and concerns will disappear, you will trust in your clothing and wear it often, feeling immediately confident and capable when you dress, allowing you to move successfully in many ways!
